In 2016, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with four-year funding support from the IMO-European Union Project, Capacity Building for Climate Mitigation in the Maritime Shipping Industry, began an initiative to create a Global Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre (MTCC) Network and establish an MTCC in the following regions: Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Pacific.
Co-hosted by SPC and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), MTCC-Pacific operates as an integrated platform, bringing together a diverse portfolio of projects focused on advancing low-carbon technology uptake across the Pacific region. By addressing key thematic areas such as sustainable maritime transport, renewable energy integration, and climate-resilient infrastructure, MTCC-Pacific is driving transformative change. Central to its mission is building knowledge and skills among stakeholders, equipping communities, governments, and industry leaders with the tools and expertise needed to adopt and implement low-carbon solutions. Through targeted training, capacity-building workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives, MTCC-Pacific is empowering Pacific Island nations to reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and achieve sustainable development goals. This holistic approach ensures that the region is not only adopting low-carbon technologies but also building the expertise required to sustain and scale these efforts for a greener, more resilient future.
The vision of the MTCC-Pacific is to promote a Pacific low-carbon maritime transport that supports the sustainable development goals of Pacific Islands countries and territories (PICTs) and the transition towards greener economies in the Pacific."
